Washburn spent several periods in California, beginning in 1916, executing primarily landscapes between leaving for summers in Maine, for Vladivostok, Maine agaon, and New Jersey, and then back to Mexico for the Bullfighting series. In late 1925 he began a sustained period in Morro Bay, which is grouped separately from these earlier California prints.
A few prints are identified as belonging to annual or biennial series - California Series I, II, or III. However most prints can not be identified by series; a partial exception is Series II, done in 1919, where the estate retains copies of prints with the series designation recorded on them; these are most often printed on a brown paper that Washburn had purchased in Canton, on his way to or from Bangkok.
