When Washburn left Italy in the Fall of 1903 he went first to stay with family in Minneapolis. He travelled to Havana in Janary, where he began a series of etchings in the city. In his month there he produced half a dozen relatively large plates. InFebruary he received a cable from his brother, Stanley Washburn, inviting Cadwallader to join him as he travelled to Japan to cover the Russo-Japanese war for a Chicago newspaper. Washburn left Cuba immediately.
