In 1929 Washburn went to Algiers, intending to stay there for an extended visit, but, disappointed with Algier's development, he returned and - eventually - made his was to Tunisia. He settled in Sousse, where he did primarily portraits, in editions of 35. Many of the portraits made repeated use of a few favorite models. A single print from his brief stop in Algiers is included with this grouping.
According to notes by Washburn, Bazaar Merchant, Fakir, Tunisian Jew and Rabbi were the same model. The two Ezekiel prints and "Snoring" were of another model used repeatedly by Washburn.
